Abstract: Thin films of rare earth (RE) – 3d transition metal (TM) systems are of great interest due to their possible applications in magneto-optical recording, micro-mechanics, surface acoustic wave filters, and THz emitters. Such a wide range of applications results from the unique properties of the RE-TM alloys and multilayers, which simultaneously exhibit many interesting magnetic phenomena such as magnetostriction, perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, and ferrimagnetism. Other interesting aspects are the possibility to switch their magnetization by femtosecond laser pulses, and the formation of non-trivial spin textures such as antiskyrmions and skyrmions of higher orders. Most of these effects are related to structural disorder and the intrinsic non-collinear arrangement of magnetic moments in RE and TM sublattices. During the seminar, I will discuss selected experimental and numerical results presenting how these properties can be adjusted by intrinsic and extrinsic defects, and show that understanding of the magnetism of RE-TM systems requires taking into account factors such as inhomogeneities, defects and surface effects.
