Will speak about: "Macroscopic Quantum Effects – The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics and our research"

Date, time: February 4 at 13:00 in Room 16 (Sala Rady), Collegium Physicum.

Abstract: One of the major questions in physics is the maximum size of a system that can demonstrate quantum mechanical effects. Last year’s Nobel Prize in Physics laureates, John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis conducted experiments in the 1980s  with an electrical circuit built of superconductors in which they demonstrated both quantum mechanical tunneling and quantized energy levels in a macroscopic system. Together, the Cooper pairs of electrons moving through the superconductor comprised a system that behaved as if they were a single particle that filled the entire circuit. The laureates’ experiments demonstrated that quantum mechanical properties can be manifested on a macroscopic scale. The laureates also demonstrate that the system behaves in the manner predicted by quantum mechanics. It is quantized, meaning that it only absorbs or emits specific amounts of energy. Research awarded last year's Nobel Prize in Physics has created opportunities for the development of the next generation of quantum technology, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers and quantum sensors.
We also present our research on macroscopic quantum effects in superconducting systems, in which we proposed applying magnetically modulated microwave absorption measurements in various superconducting systems made of conventional low- and high-temperature superconductors. We have shown that using this technique it is possible to demonstrate macroscopic quantum tunneling and energy quantization in these macroscopic systems.
