Abstract:
It is well recognized that in Mott insulators, when charge degrees of freedom are locked due to strong interactions, spin degrees of freedom remain active through spin-exchange caused by highenergy fluctuations. First, on the example of equilibrium Hubbard model, I will present an efficient variational approach [1] which allows for studying behavior of spin-exchange in the whole range of interaction strengths, thus including analysis of its gradual appearance in correlated metal state before Mott transition takes place. Subsequently, I will show how the method can be extended to the time domain allowing for capturing physics of high energy fluctuations in dynamical situations in an efficient manner [2]. Explicitly, I will demonstrate its performance on the example of interaction quench in the Hubbard model and associated dynamical Mott transition. Finally, I will provide an interpretation based on dynamical behavior of high energy fluctuations to the numerical observation of resonant dynamics in a periodically driven Mott insulator via modulation of interaction strength around large amplitude [3].
