The discovery of 2D materials has attracted significant research interest for their industrial applications in electronic, optical, and switchable devices. In this presentation, I will show you how to use compressive strain to tune physical properties of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides, graphene, and their heterostructures. Ultrahigh compressive strain can be produced under hydrostatic pressure with a strain rate up to 10-20% that surpasses the number produced in traditional strain devices. Such a high compressive strain can significantly shorten the interlayer van der Waals bonds of 2D materials and enhance interlayer interactions and charge transfers. Electronic, optical, structural and thermal transport properties of 2D materials can be effectively tuned, leading to semiconductor-metal transition, enhanced thermal conductivity, direct-indirect band gap transition, charge transfer, and carrier density and mobility change. I will also discuss how to use 2D materials to discover novel polymeric nitrogen compounds at extremes.
