Laser induced white emission

The laser induced white emission (LIWE) phenomenon was for the first time reported in lanthanide materials by Wang and Tanner (Journal of the American Chemical Society 132, 947, 2010. Since then it was intensively investigated in different inorganic materials. The emission spectrum of LIWE is the broadband centered at 650 nm and characterized by the excitation threshold, exponential dependence on excitation laser power, saturation effect and hysteresis loop. The LIWE is related to interaction of focused laser beam with a surface of solid state material that leads to multiphoton ionization, ejection of hot electrons and broadband white emission. In the present lecture the examples of white emission in rare doped crystals and graphene will be demonstrated.
